Backpacking, A Fun Activity For The Family

0

Taking the family backpacking is an educational and fun activity for everyone. Mother Nature has an abundance of rewards out in the wilderness. Finding new types of vegetation, naming unfamiliar trees, hiking an unknown trail, pitching the tent in a new environment are all challenges the whole family will enjoy.

The first backpacking adventure should be full of excitement. This will assure that everyone will want to eventually journey out on a second trip. Since this is a family activity it should be something the family plans. The parents should gather some magazines, pictures, brochures, whatever is available and bring the family together to determine the destination. The first trip should be planned close to home.

One of the biggest complaints resulting from a backpack trip is the cold. It is a part of being in the outdoors. However, no one should suffer from the low temperatures if the trip is well-planned. During the day everyone can stay warm by layering the clothing. The first layer might be a t-shirt. This can be followed by a flannel shirt. A sweatshirt might be the third layer. Finally, a fourth layer that will be good for the weather. If it is wet then some type of raincoat will help protect against the elements. If it is cold and windy then a warm jacket. Throughout the day, if anyone becomes too hot then simply begin removing the layers.

The evening can be the time when it really gets cool. Proper planning, and putting the right items in the backpack, will help alleviate this problem. Warm sleeping bags to place inside a well-insulated tent will help in the fight against the cold. There are also some great new heaters that are safe and do a great job for keeping the interior warm. Keeping warm, during the day and night, is a key to a successfull backpacking trip.

Also, remember to take a first aide kit on the trip. This should be packed with items that meet the needs of the family. First aid cream as well as a burn cream, sunburn lotion protection, alcohol wipes, and gauze pads, should be included along with whatever prescriptions and other items the family might need.

It is important that the backpack contain everything needed for the trip. It is important not to overpack the child’s gear. The backpack should never contain more than 15 per cent of the child’s weight. If the youngster weighs 100 pounds than the backpack should contain no more than 15 pounds.

Plan the backpacking trip together with the family. Make certain that everyone will stay warm. Pack everything the family will need. This will help to make the trip fun for everyone.
