Lightweight Emergency Medical Supplies For Hiking

0

Hiking is a really excellent way to exercise. Whether you’re going for long hike or just a simple weekend excursion, hiking can benefit your health in so many ways! However, as with any other activity or sport, accidents do happen, so it’s important to be safe, be prepared, and have certain emergency medical supplies with you. The most basic items you should consider are probably also the most obvious ones. Just the same, let’s go over a few of the items you should bring with you when you’re going hiking:

First off, it’s important that you always have your driver’s license other other identification with you. This way, if something does happen, an emergency team will be able to figure out who you are. You should also carry an index card with you with your full name, address, home number and information for an emergency contact. Also, use this card to list all of your allergies, current medications, and your most significant health problems. Similarly, it’s a good idea to keep any medical ID bracelets you might have on your person.

As for EMT supplies, most people recommend storing these in two separate kits. In the first pack, you should have your necessities such as a compass, mirror, LED light and whistle. This kit should also include your index card as well. The mirror and the whistle will both be used for the same purpose—to signal for help. In different situations one of these tools might be more useful than the other. For example, if you did get lost or hurt and you see a helicopter going by above you, a whistle isn’t going to help—not with those rotating blades. A mirror, however, might be able to reflect the sunlight and get some attention. You might also consider placing Mylar blankets and a lighter in this pack.

In the second and much larger pack, you should have prescription medicines, electrolyte replacement powder, aspirin, and an antihistamine such as Benadryl, as well as wound care items like bandages, band aids, and an antibacterial astringent. Also, don’t forget to pack a few bottles of water. You could benefit from food items as well, including simple things like energy bars or even canned tuna fish or peanut butter.

It’s really important to take extra items with you when you go on long hikes or if you are going to a place you aren’t familiar with. I know it seems somewhat redundant, but if you get lost, these items will definitely heighten your chances for survival. If you are going to be near water, take flint with you instead of a lighter. I’ve seen people use zip lock bags for matches or lighters, but sometimes even these can become wet. So try for flint and steel kits or water- and wind-proof matches. With these survival tools and EMS gear, you’re all set to have a safe and healthy trip!
