Betws-y-coed Conwy County Is A Charming Place To Visit
Betws-y-Coed Conwy County is a beautiful little village in the Conwy valley of Wales. Only about 500 people live in the village that has Victorian architecture and when it snows it gives off an Alpine feel. If you are an active person you will find much to do in this tiny village.
The name of the town roughly translates to Prayer House in the Wood. It lies right in Snowdonia National Park and started out as a monastery in the sixth century. Much of the culture of the area goes back to the Bronze Age and you will hear the ancient language of Wales spoken most prominently. Here you can find stone circles made during the Neolithic age, forts from the Iron Age, a Roman fort and a monument devoted to princes of the past.
The focal point of the village is the large green which doubles as a football playing field. All around the green are buildings housing shops, hotels and businesses along with the church of St. Mary. This church was built in 1873 and is made in stone. There is a Railway Museum in the village with a large model train set up. There is also a motor museum that displays vintage automobiles.
Other attractions to see is the fourteenth century church, St. Michael that was originally linked to the name of the town Prayer House in the Wood. There are several trails through the woods in the village that are marked well and great for hikers. You can visit the Fairy Glen, several waterfalls, and do not miss Conwy Fish pass. Fishing is a great past time at the Llyn Elsi reservoir.
In Snowdonia you will find the Tree Top Adventure. This is a rope course that covers the treetops in the forest. You must negotiate several obstacles on the course all while you are in the tops of the trees. The course takes about two hours to complete and you can go as an individual or in a small or large group.
Quaddragon Road Buggies offers a view of Snowdonia that you will not be able to get anywhere else. The Buggies can get places regular transportation can not. They have two seats and you can go out alone, with a guide or in a group. The tour can last a couple of hours or all day if you desire. See limestone caves, castles that were built long ago, waterfalls, lakes and the Snowdonia mountain range. There is many forms of wildlife in the area and if you are lucky you will see the wild goats that roam the area.
A favorite past time in the village is to go hiking in the forest. Snowdonia National Park has about 800 square miles to explore. The highest peak of thirteen in the mountains is about 3500 feet. You can also explore the park by auto or train or do something really fun and go by horse provided by the many stables in the area.
Many people come to hike or participate in other activities in the forest. Others come to relax and see the attractions in and around the area and enjoy this quaint little village. There are plenty of places to stay the night and many cafes and restaurants in which to get good food. You can even go shopping around the green and maybe take in a game from the local football teams.
