Tips For Gold Coast Backpackers And Hitch Hikers

0

Gold Coast backpackers! Welcome to Gold Coast Australia! This is one of the most beautiful places in the world to backpack. The scenery is gorgeous, the air is fresh, the people are friendly, and there are plenty of places to stay. However, there are a few things that every traveller should keep in mind no matter where they are.

To list just a few of the most important pieces of advice you need to be armed with…

Carry Water

Carry lots of water! For longer trips, you should never have less than a gallon on you. A couple of bottles in your backpack should do the trip. Even if you plan on hitch hiking, you never know when you might have to walk a few miles before you find anyone willing to let you in. When you’re walking, it’s very easy to get dehydrated, so make sure you stop for water breaks now and then.

Carry Your Towel

This is more than a literary joke, it’s also common sense. A towel really is the most useful and versatile tool in a traveller’s inventory. You can convert a towel into just about anything: A hat, a spare shoe, an extra pillow, a seat cover, a picnic blanket, an umbrella, you name it, a towel can be it. You don’t know when, why or how you’ll need an towel, but you can be sure you’ll need one sooner or later.

Be Careful

Most Gold Coast folk are very kind, trustworthy people, but every road has its drunk drivers. When you’re hitch hiking, be smart, know who to trust. Whether you’re hitch hiking in Australia, the US or Candyland, there’s never a guarantee that everyone passing through is as cool as the locals, so just exercise your basic, God given common sense, and be careful.

Make Your Reservations

There are more hostels and B&B establishments along the Gold Coast than you can shake a stick at, but it always helps to book ahead and make sure you can get a bed to sleep in before you arrive in town. You don’t want to be stuck wondering where you’re going to stay, so just make sure you have it all planned out in advance so you don’t wind up at the phone booth for hours on end trying to see who has a spare room for you to rent out.

Take a Break!

You want to keep going when travelling, but if you feel tired, take a day and just stay in one town! Take a load off, see what sort of TV they watch in Australia, have a drink or two, and just stay an extra night before rambling’ on. Not too long, or you may get lethargic, but a day or two off the road can really help to give you a pause to stop and think about your journey so far. Remember, a backpacking trip isn’t just a trip around the world, it’s also an internal voyage, helping you to discover your own place in the world, and what you want to do with your life. Take the time to journey inwards as well as outwards.
