What Helpful Camping Gear Do You Recommend?

10

We are heading out soon with a large group, and I was hoping to hunt for some bargains on camping misc in the next couple of weeks. Not so much for hiking, but more for cooking, games, kids (all ages) etc. Thanks!

Keep in mind the available features of where you are going camping. Then head out to walmart and get cheap outdoor toys, water toys, things like that.
If there is a good stream where you are going, you can even get the kids into a bit of “gold panning”. A plastic gold pan, cheap black plastic but works well, is only about $8. Doesn’t matter if there is gold or not just the “treasure hunting” idea will get the kids fired up for it.

I’m assuming you’re camping at a state park or something an not backpacking.
The most important item to have when you’re camping is, of course, a good tent. You also want to make sure to have a good ground tarp so the dew doesn’t soak up into your sleeping bags.
For cooking it’s tough to beat a propane stove, you can get a two burner one for less than $50. Using a stove is much easier than trying to cook over an open fire. I find it easiest to bring a couple of pots and some cheap washable plates and bowls. It’s easier to clean up the plates than deal with all the trash.
Horseshoes is a good portable game for all ages, as is ladder golf (see the site below). Ladder golf is great fun and you don’t have to worry as much about weight. I would also bring paper and pens as writing and drawing are good ways to pass the time. If you’re near water, any kind of flotation devices are good, as are water guns. Fishing is fun as well and is a great way to get some nice fresh food.
You may also want to invest in an inflatable mattress as it makes sleeping much easier if you’re on rough ground.

a good sleeping bag is a must. bring tons of candy. this is a time to hang and pig out with friends and family. you can also bring hot dogs, burgers, chicken. potato’s(baked potato’s), bring cards, bouncy balls, a push cart or a umbrella stroller if the kids are not big enough to take a walk. but for the most part in a big group you are all going to be sharing stories and have a great time amongst each other

the best thing is to bring a flashlight and th thing that you talk into and it projects your vooice loud (can’t remember name) then you can go for walks, and in the really early morning (3:00am) just point the flashlight at someone and yell. you scare the crud out of people, and it helps to yell like “this is the police, get the h*** out of your tents and put your hands up you bit**s”

Roll-up self-inflating air mattresses are a must. Those collapsible camp chairs are nice.
As far as game, I always loved playing giant games of capture that flag on camping trips. All you need is a few cones, or bright colored tape and a couple flags.
As far as food. SMORES! Bring tin foil, graham crackers, marshmallows, and small chocolate bars!!

    Hello,
If you have the essentials (sleeping bag, tent, & pack), the rest of the stuff can be easy…and cheap. Try doing activities like pinecone birdfeeders, leaf rubbings, and scavenger hunts for the kids. These are lots of fun and inexpensive. As for campfire items, a long sharp stick works best. If you’re “skeeved” out by the wood, cover the tip in tin foil. Hope that helps. Check out the site below for some more tips. Have fun!

Hit Goodwill. You can find pots and pans for cheap. You can also get camping clothes that you won’t care about trashing. Not to mention plastic cups etc. Just be sure to wash them before you pack them. :)
