    • ]]>     I am going on a camping trip with this program and they’ve giving me some gear. But the hiking pack and the back pack is the problem. How will I be able to check that in? I don’t want a lot of baggage because that’s money we don’t have.
    This is what I’m worried about:

    Sleeping Bag
    Sleeping pad
    Nylon Stuff Packs
    Wool/Fleece Jacket
    Tennis Shoes
    Bug Repellent
    Clothes
    Pocket Knife
    Flashlight
    Sun screen
    Batteries
    Camera
    Rain Gear
    Are there any limits to what I can fly with? How can I fly with a hiking pack? What can I bring as a carry on? Can I put liquids in my luggage like shampoo,lotion,conditioner, perfume? Can I bring Tylenol and Midol as a carry on?
    Thanks because I leave in 2 1/2 weeks!

    • ]]>     Imagine that you can outfit yourself for free for a 100 mile hike in a summer’s week of diligent walking. You’re trying to be inconspicuous and have as little contact with other people as possible during that week. Much of the hike will be cross-country, but a good bit will be along the roadside also.
    What brand and size backpack would you choose?
    What shoes (make & style) would you wear? For example: New Balance trail running shoes or Montrail hiking boots. (Specify model name if you have a preference.)
    What shelter and bedroll would you carry? Tent or hammock? What make? Sleeping bag or just a blanket? (Remember, it’s a summer hike.)
    Would you carry along a camp stove, and if so which model?
    What sort of toiletries, tools and cleaning items would you take along?
    What sort of clothes would you wear: fabric, cut, color?
    What kind of food & drink would you carry, and how much?
    What would all this stuff volume & weigh? Can you carry that much in the pack?

    • ]]>     Backpacking, tent camping, and spending a night out in nature are great activities. An overnight trip doesn’t seem much time to really get into it. My suggestions is decide where you are going to go, what season you will be going, who you will be going with. What activities you will be doing, and what are the conditions you may encounter. Take into consideration, your age, abilities, capabilities and weaknesses. Assess your situation. Plan for the worst and expect the best.
    For a two full day – one night trip I would consider the length of hike you will be involved with and how much you are willing to carry. Fully loaded 4500 to 6500 cubic inch packs can way as much as 70 lbs. A ten mile hike in and a ten mile hike out with all of that weight can be most tiring for even the avid hiker.
    The basics for a good hike involve some planning for weight, and size. A moderate down or poly sleeping bag that can be compressed into a stuff sack and a lightweight tent will keep you quite comfortable for the time being. If water is available and you can filter it will reduce the weight of carrying water. Hydration systems are the latest generation to the old clumsy canteen. You will need to consider the body will need at least 2 liters of water a day in mild or moderate temperatures. Foods that are easy to prepare are great for overnighters. Dried fruits and nuts provide an excellent source of energy while hiking. Remember, what ever trash you bring in you will need to take out with you. Plan for the change of weather, a pile of clothes make a good pillow at night. A compass, and map are great to have. (learn how to use them first!) I carry a handheld GPS and a camera. Enjoy nature and the outdoors.

    • ]]>     I’m going to hike the 22-mile (35½ kilometre) Mourne Wall next week. It has been described as “one of the greatest mountain walks in Ireland”, but is a tough mountainous walk with some very steep and rocky slopes, along with some wet and boggy patches.
    I already have (I think) everything I need, but just in case I have forgotten anything, what are your suggestions?
    I’m only going to need to camp out overnight once, two full days of walking should complete it.
    The advance weather forecast is good – dry but overcast with the temperature ranging from 17 to 24 degrees celcius (63 to 76 degrees fahrenheit)
