I am a pretty good hiker and have done many hikes and camping trips in the wilderness in all seasons in the United States. I was planing to to a solo hiking trip for a few days in the French Alps. I want a magazine that has product reviews/previews about hiking and camping gear. I have just recently started overnight hikes and backcountry camping, instead of my usual day hikes. I usually get all my information now from my local hiking store. I would like to know what are the best brands for certain products, what is the best for my money, what I’ll need on the long trips, what brands/items to avoid. The next time I go to the store I’ll ask the guys there what is a good one, but I thought I would get your opinions too. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What Gear Does An Experienced Backpacker Take On The Trail For An Overnight, Cold Weather Hike/camp?

Backpacking, tent camping, and spending a night out in nature are great activities. An overnight trip doesn’t seem much time to really get into it. My suggestions is decide where you are going to go, what season you will be going, who you will be going with. What activities you will be doing, and what are the conditions you may encounter. Take into consideration, your age, abilities, capabilities and weaknesses. Assess your situation. Plan for the worst and expect the best.
For a two full day – one night trip I would consider the length of hike you will be involved with and how much you are willing to carry. Fully loaded 4500 to 6500 cubic inch packs can way as much as 70 lbs. A ten mile hike in and a ten mile hike out with all of that weight can be most tiring for even the avid hiker.
The basics for a good hike involve some planning for weight, and size. A moderate down or poly sleeping bag that can be compressed into a stuff sack and a lightweight tent will keep you quite comfortable for the time being. If water is available and you can filter it will reduce the weight of carrying water. Hydration systems are the latest generation to the old clumsy canteen. You will need to consider the body will need at least 2 liters of water a day in mild or moderate temperatures. Foods that are easy to prepare are great for overnighters. Dried fruits and nuts provide an excellent source of energy while hiking. Remember, what ever trash you bring in you will need to take out with you. Plan for the change of weather, a pile of clothes make a good pillow at night. A compass, and map are great to have. (learn how to use them first!) I carry a handheld GPS and a camera. Enjoy nature and the outdoors.

I’m going to hike the 22-mile (35½ kilometre) Mourne Wall next week. It has been described as “one of the greatest mountain walks in Ireland”, but is a tough mountainous walk with some very steep and rocky slopes, along with some wet and boggy patches.
I already have (I think) everything I need, but just in case I have forgotten anything, what are your suggestions?
I’m only going to need to camp out overnight once, two full days of walking should complete it.
The advance weather forecast is good – dry but overcast with the temperature ranging from 17 to 24 degrees celcius (63 to 76 degrees fahrenheit)
